influencers - Chris Friel
(first published July 2, 2021)
I am unsure why it has taken so long but I only recently discovered the spell-binding work of Chris Friel.
Chris is a British color-blind photographer noted for his abstract photographs. His techniques involve the use of multiple long exposures, intentional camera movements or incorporating the use of a tilt-shift lens. Chris’s aim in all cases is to provide a unique interpretation of a subject rather than a true representation.
About the Artist
Chris actually started life as a painter, switching to photography only later in life (and has not painted since). Further details on Chris, his workflow, awards and magazine interviews are readily available on the web.
From Chris’s website
“Chris Friel is a british photographer who has spent a long time trying to take a photograph that he likes
To that end he has produced more than a million images over the last decade
His photos have been exhibited at the South Bank centre, on the Santiago subway in Chile, and projected behind the london sinfonietta in the Royal Festival Hall
They have appeared in the times, the Guardian, the Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone Magazine and on a lot of album covers
He has worked in 150 countries and would very much like to visit the remaining 46 before the next world war”
Source of inspiration
I find that the work that Chris produces speaks to me on the most basic of levels, in many respects aligned in what I strive to achieve myself, but with a much-elevated sense of creativity. Whenever I view Chris’s work I instantly look for reasons to pick up my camera to shoot. If only it were that easy……….
