alone in the storm

I truly believe that each image should convey its own story to the viewer, the very best of which evoking a response that has been expertly crafted by the photographer. However, the tale as presented may well be incomplete, lacking details that could well elevate the viewing experience. After all, how many times do we look at art, or hear a piece of music and form a stronger bond after learning of an interesting story that’s attached?

The story behind a piece of art can often serve as a bridge between the creator's intention and the viewer's interpretation, fostering a deeper connection. When an artist shares the inspiration, emotions, or circumstances that led to the creation of their work, it provides viewers with a unique lens through which to perceive the piece. In turn, this information enriches the viewer's experience, offering them a more profound appreciation for the art.

Such may be the case in the following work.

This shot was taken at a location I had visited several times, in fact if you review my work you may recognize the tree having been displayed in various forms during varying seasons, with lake and mountains forming a resplendent backdrop.

This day was special though. With an extended snowstorm forecasted all schools and many businesses in the area closed pre-emptively for the day, others closing soon thereafter as snowplows struggled to keep roads in a manageable condition.

Watching the storm progress I had an idea that the snowfall might help isolate this particular tree, and was eager to test that theory.

Balancing opportunity against risk, I decided to at least make an attempt. Traffic from the outset was minimal as snow was deepening, dropping to non-existent as I arrived at the site.

Steady snowfall dampened both sight and sound, falling flakes creating a perfect backdrop to accentuate the form of the tree.

Every time I stumble upon this image, I am transported back through time. Back to the storm gently falling around me and a landscape draped in deep blanket of undisturbed snow.

Back to an eerie silence, an understanding that no living creature was near, a profound sense of complete and utter calm. Above all else, a feeling emerged, suggesting that although the tree and I stood completely alone, we battled the storm together."

The emotional connection adds so much to the image for this photographer, and I hope that knowing the story may add something of value to the reader. Ideally, this knowledge will help transport readers to a similar place and time, where they feel part of what the photographer experienced when releasing the shutter.

Emotions connected to this event have been so strong that some time ago, I penned the words below—words I have not shared in the past but feel may add to this tale:

A shroud of snow masks all but the gentle whispers of its own falling flakes,

It’s time to shelter, to bathe in the luxurious warmth of radiant flames.

But not for you and I my friend, not on this gray and silent day.

This morn we stand alone, soaking in the serene majesty of the passing storm.

I’d love to know how others feel about stories relating to images, and whether they have their own tale to tell. Feel free to add comments in the related section below, all viewpoints are important, respected and appreciated by me.
